Concrete house achieves "5-Star-Plus" Energy Star status!
An IntegraSpec ICF home in Evansville, IN has been tested and received the highest Energy Star rating available..."5-Star-Plus". The HERS Index on this home is 53. This means that the home is 47% more energy efficient than a reference home built to meet the 2006 International Energy Code. To achieve such high energy marks, the home utilized ICF construction throughout, Icynene spray-foam insulation against the roof deck, a WaterFurnace geothermal heat pump system, a CleanSpace encapsulated crawlspace system, and low-E coated windows. Both the crawlspace and the attic of the home are non-vented and conditioned. According to the computer modelling of the energy rating software, the home will cost just under $1 per day to heat and cool. The actual utility bills from Vectren are confirming this level of performance. The bills over the past 4 months have been ranging between $40 & $70, including the lights, hot water heating costs, and service fees from the utility company.
If you're interested in getting this level of energy performance from your own new home, attend one of our Energy Pros (www.theenergypros.net) seminars before finalizing your construction plan details.
If you're asking yourself, "Yeah, but what did it cost?", you'll probably be surprised. All of the energy upgrades (ICF's, spray-foam insulation, geothermal HVAC system, low-E windows, CleanSpace, etc.) added only about 20% to the overall build cost of the home. With the savings on the monthly utilities, though, this home will more than pay for the increase in the monthly mortgage payment, plus it's the safest, most quiet, and most durable home on the block.
