Ryan and Aaron O’Daniel have a whole new twist on concrete

When John "Scrappie" O'Daniel and his two sons Ryan and Aaron, left O’Donnell Trucking late last year they were not exactly sure what endeavor they would try next.

It was only natural when the decision was made it included concrete, after all the O'Daniel name is synonymous with concrete.

Although O'Daniel Inc. will be working with concrete, the new company owned by Ryan, Aaron and John has a whole new twist on the concrete business. O'Daniel, Inc., is now the exclusive area distributor of IntegraSpec, one of the best ICF systems on the market.

ICFs are basically forms for poured concrete walls that stay in place as permanent part of the wall assembly. The forms, made of foam insulating material, are either pre-formed interlocking blocks or separate panels connected with plastic ties.

The left-in place forms not only provide a continuous insulation and sound barrier, but also a backing for drywall on the inside, and stucco, lap siding or brick on the outside.

"IntegraSpec is an insulated concrete form (ICF) consisting of two panels of expanded foam polystyrene married with high impact polystyrene spacers, basically a better way of building concrete walls," said Ryan O'Daniel. "The system is more energy efficient. An IntegraSpec home in Canada was named the most energy efficient home in the country."

O'Daniel said the "R" performance is around 40. He explained that is not a true "R" value, but the forms provide an R rating of about 22, and with the concrete in the middle, an IntegraSpec wall will provide the equivalent of an R factor of 40. He said considering most "stick homes" (2x4 construction) have an R rating of about 15.

The IntegraSpec homes are sturdier and display an improvement in air quality, because of a lower air exchange rate. The homes can be built with increased steel reinforcement bars to withstand extreme winds.

The homes also provide an extra measure of protection from fire. O'Daniel explained construction costs would run about 10 percent higher than a 2x4 constructed home. However, a homeowner could realize 40-50 percent savings in utilities, in theory recouping the additional cost in two-three years.

O'Daniel Inc. doesn't actually plan to go into the house construction business full time, but hopes to work with area contractors, who will do the building with the IntegraSpec system. "If someone wants us, we will be available," said Aaron. "Our primary goal is to be distributors of the system."

The IntegraSpec homes can be built on any number of floor plans with four, six, eight or ten inch cores. Drywall can be readily applied on the inside walls. Brick siding can be installed on the outside walls with relative ease.

"I don't see why anyone considering building a new home, or building, wouldn't consider this system," said Ryan. "We invite everyone to visit our web site for some sample walls and more information on the Integraspec system." That Website is odanielinc.com. One may also call the O'Daniel, Inc. office at 618-382-8825 or toll free, 1-877-382-8825. The office is located at 1707 A Oak Street, Carmi, Illinois.

O'Daniel, Inc. will be covering the lower 30 counties in Southern Illinois and will likely expand into Indiana in the near future. The company participated in the recent Home and Garden Show at Roberts Stadium in Evansville, Indiana and was well received. "We met some nice people and picked up some leads," said Aaron. "We hope contractors and anyone wanting to build will consider this system."
